English is the most widely spoken and written language in the world today and has the prestigious position of being an International language. It is utilised by the largest number of people in many nations on all 5 continents. There are important historical, political and economic reasons for its popularity. Obviously one is because English speaking nations like GB and the US have made it prominent. However, no language can become so important unless it has outstanding and special characteristics to explain its phenomenal growth and popularity.
These main characteristics are:
Receptiveness: it has accepted and adopted words from Asian, African, Indian, Japanese, Chinese and other languages, as well as from Latin, Greek and Sanskrit.,
Heterogeneousness: English contains words from so many other languages that it has become the most mixed language in the world with many words creeping in, often with spelling changed but meanings staying the same.
Simplicity of Inflexion: In English the relationship of words into a sentence can be indicated with only the minimum of change in their shapes. Eg: India - Indian
Fixed Word Order: this arrangement becomes necessary for the proper relationship of the words in the sentence to avoid ambiguity.
Use of Periphrasis: or round about ways of expressing ideas or feelings making it possible to say something in many different ways, making the language rich and varied.
Growth of Intonation: which allows the different shades of meanings. The pitch or intensity or the tone of voice can change the meaning of the sentence completely.
The more I delve into the business of teaching others English as a language for business, the more proud and pleased I am that I possess the ability to communicate using this language. The ability to conduct business in English is central to our most ambitious business objectives.
